It was Halloween night.
Sarah was curled up on her couch, watching the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
A large bowl of candy was placed on the coffee table in front of her, waiting for the trick-or-treaters to come calling.
Sarah’s mind wandered, and she thought of her best friend, Jamie.
She eyed her cell phone, considering whether or not to call Jamie and invite her over for some Halloween fun.
Jamie had been quite down and confused lately, since she had forced herself to end her relationship with her beloved but controlling boyfriend Michael.
Sarah’s cell phone began to ring.
She picked it up and smiled as Jamie’s name displayed on the screen.
She pressed the green button eagerly.
“Hi, Jamie!” She greeted her friend, brightly.
There was a faint click and then silence.
That was odd. She thought. She’s probably just messing with me.
She placed the phone on the arm of the couch and returned her attention to the movie.
The cell phone soon rang again.
Sarah smirked as Jamie’s name appeared on the screen for the second time.
“I know what you’re up to, Jamie.” She teased.
Once again the phone clicked into silence.
As the credits rolled on the T.V. screen an hour and a half later, Sarah’s ringtone blared again.
She hesitated, not wanting to give Jamie the satisfaction for a third time, but shrugged and picked up the phone.
“You’re not funny, Jamie.” She said, and the line clicked into dead silence again.
I’ll show her. Sarah thought sneakily and dialled Jamie’s number.
The phone rang four times before it clicked to life.
Sarah remained silent, her finger poised on the red button.
However, something caught her attention and she pressed the phone closer to her ear, listening intently.
A soft shuffling sound, accompanied by quiet gagging, choking sounds.
“Jamie?!” Sarah was immediately alarmed.
Was Jamie in trouble?
Had she choked on a piece of Halloween candy and was trying to call for help?
A voice came through on the other end of the line.
A deep, sinister voice unlike any Sarah had ever heard before.
“Sorry, Sarah.” It purred. “Jamie doesn’t live here anymore.”
Once again, the line clicked into silence.
Sarah ended the call and dialled 911.
On the news the next morning, footage of Jamie’s house was shown.
Jamie’s naked, lifeless body had been discovered, sprawled on the kitchen floor.
Her cell phone lay nearby, its cover opened, its battery removed.
She had been beaten, raped and strangled authorities reported.
Her face was beyond recognition; dental records were all they had to go on.
As Sarah stared numbly at the T.V. screen, one name came to her mind.
Michael.
